For a while, Wichita PD and Mayor Longwell have been encouraging the community to stop handing out money to panhandlers. Now, it's law.
Drivers who give money to panhandlers, and the those who solicit for donations, will soon face a possible criminal misdemeanor charge and a $500 fine and/or 30 days in jail for repeat offenders.
Deputy Police Chief Troy Livingston said that it's a safety issue, "Whether it’s an issue with the pedestrian or the driver, we want them to focus on their driving."
The new ordinance will also ban charities from soliciting donations in the street.
