Zei Uwandia was your average 16-year-old girl at Wichita North High School until a mystery illness left her breathless. Unable to find the source of her illness, doctors flew her to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City where she was put on an ECMO machine- the highest level of life support.
Zei's blood is circulated through an artificial lung that adds oxygen and takes out carbon dioxide before returning it to her body to keep her alive. She has been on the machine for over 130 days. But Zei has become a walking miracle, literally, by walking, talking, and eating tacos while on life support.
The purpose of the machine is to help the patient's body heal... and it seems to be working! Doctors say the last x-ray of her lungs shows improvement!
