Facebook Fundraiser Had A Goal Of $1,500... So Far Has Raised Over $8 Mil

What started out as a fundraiser to cover fees for the bond fees for one parent to retrieve their child from government custody while waiting for court has turned into the largest single fundraiser ever on Facebook. Silicon Valley couple Charlotte and Dave Willner started with an initial goal of raising $1,500 for their cause, but it went viral and private donors started matching funds to help reunite immigrant parents with their children.

All the proceeds from the Willners’ reunite an immigrant parent with their child Facebook fundraiser will benefit RAICES, the biggest immigration legal services provider in Texas. And in just four days, nearly 140,000 people have donated more than $5.6-million and it’s still going.

The Willners were inspired to take action after being alarmed by reports that over 2,000 children had been separated from their parents, so they set up the fundraiser Saturday morning. "It's clearly resonating with a lot of people, and we're just glad we could help," Charlotte Willner says.

"The funding we are receiving will save lives. It will keep people from being deported to unsafe countries," Jenny Hixon of RAICES explains. "It speaks to the outrage the cruel policies at the border have provoked. It honestly gives us hope in what has felt like a very dark time."
