Boston Doctor Says Mona Lisa’s Smile Is Due To A Medical Condition - A Boston doctor believes he knows the reason for the Mona Lisa's mysterious smile.
Dr. Mandeep Mehra of Brigham and Women's Hospital thinks the woman in the world's most famous painting was sick and likely suffered from thyroid disease.
He says that would explain Lisa Gherardini's yellowish skin, puffy neck, lack of eyebrows and eyelashes and receding hairline. Dr. Mehra thinks hypothyroidism could have impaired the nerves in Mona Lisa's face, keeping the Italian matron from smiling completely when Leonardo da Vinci painted her in the early 1500s.
