'Road Trip' Expert Coming To Wichita

One of my favorite things to do is take day trips, or weekend getaways.  We have lots of cool things very close to the Wichita area.

Love a Good Road Trip?

Want to travel more, but don’t know where to go? Bill Clevlen, author of “100 Things to Do in America Before You Die,” will provide some direction when he visits Wichita this month. He will present “Bill on the Road: Rediscover America” at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 25, at the Advanced Learning Library, 711 W. 2nd St. The presentation is free and open to all ages.

“We are fortunate to host nationally-known author, Bill Clevlen, in Wichita this summer – right in the midst of the busiest travel season of the year,” said Susie Santo, president and CEO of Visit Wichita. “It’s a great opportunity to get some tips from an experienced traveler on where to go, what to do and how to have fun along the way.”

According to Clevlen’s publisher, Reedy Press, the book is more than a list of places to visit but a catalog of uniquely American experiences. From sipping Southern sweet tea to standing where the Wright Brothers tested their first “flying machine,” each experience makes up an important piece of our American story.

Featured in the book is a mix of history, entertainment, art, food and sports, along with trivia questions on each page. Also included in his book as one of the ‘100 Things to Do in America Before You Die’ is Old Cowtown Museum in Wichita. As for why he selected Cowtown, Clevlen says, “It's important for Americans to understand our early days as a nation, and Cowtown illustrates it perfectly."

“It was written to inspire road trips across the country,” a Reedy Press spokesperson said. “Mountains, museums, fried chicken, small towns and even the world’s tallest mailbox await you.”

Based in St. Louis, Clevlen is a travel journalist, broadcaster and freelance writer and a frequent guest speaker and radio correspondent highlighting road trip ideas and uplifting American stories. He hosts a weekly podcast, “Rediscover America,” and also shares positive travel stories and videos on his website, www.billontheroad.com.

Visit Wichita encourages anyone who wants to travel to attend the presentation. “Bill is an incredibly entertaining speaker and has some great stories to tell to inspire travel,” she said. “If you’re a frequent traveler or if you simply aspire to travel more, you’ll enjoy his presentation – and walk away with some new ideas on where to go and places to see.”
